SUMMARY:Greetings from Mars
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Weeks of the German Language\, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus is organizing a screening of the film Greetings from Mars at the Heritage School\, a member of the worldwide network of “Schools: Partners for the Future” (PASCH). \nTom is ten years old\, autistic\, and dreams of becoming an astronaut. He loves clear structures\, hates noise and the color red. When his mother has to travel to China for work\, Tom and his siblings spend the summer holidays with their chaotic grandparents in the countryside. For Tom\, this stay becomes a personal “Mars mission”: he must face unfamiliar situations\, overcome fears\, and learns that the unknown can hold exciting discoveries. The film tells a sensitive and humorous story about family\, being different\, and the courage to grow beyond oneself. \nThe children’s film is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Möller and Sebastian Grusnick\, published in 2019. The two authors also wrote the screenplay for the adaptation\, which was directed by Sarah Winkenstette. In the leading roles\, Theo Kretschmer stars as Tom\, Lilli Lacher as Nina\, and Anton Noltensmeier as Elmar. The film was celebrated at several festivals and received multiple awards: At the Luxembourg City Film Festival 2025\, Sarah Winkenstette was honored with the Kids’ Jury Award for her direction. At the Goldener Spatz 2024\, Theo Kretschmer was awarded Best Actor. Additionally\, the prestigious White Elephant Award 2025 recognized the film twice in the cinema category – for Best Direction (Sarah Winkenstette) and Best Screenplay (Sebastian Grusnick and Thomas Möller). \nTRAILER: https://youtu.be/5mEoTBVwTso?si=PWVRz8cnAvlwOpc9 \nLanguage: German with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Staged reading with Nefeli Kentoni
DESCRIPTION:On November 23\, a staged reading directed by Nefeli Kentoni will take place\, organized by the Austrian Embassy and the Goethe-Institut Cyprus. Selected literary texts from the German-speaking world will be performed live on stage. \nLimassol – a city in transition. Gentrification and rapid urban development shape its face\, transforming streets\, houses\, and ways of life. In this reading\, we invite you on a poetic journey through the city’s transformation: its construction\, its destruction\, and the traces it leaves within us. The selected poems and texts reflect the ambivalence of the urban\, between progress and loss\, hope and despair. \nFor this event\, Nefeli Kentoni has engaged deeply with city poems by the German poet Bertolt Brecht and with the work Awakening to the Great Sleep War by the Austrian author Gert Jonke\, combining them into a unique fusion. Let yourself be surprised by this exciting and extraordinary connection! \nDirected by: Nefeli Kentoni\nOn stage: Fatima Rodriguez\, Melina Koutsofta\nModerated by: Androula Kafa\n\nInformation about the texts and Nefeli Kentoni: \nBrecht’s city poems mirror the contradictory experience of the metropolis: they reveal the harshness and desolation of urban life\, yet at the same time\, a glimpse of another future shines through. Amid concrete and despair\, hope persists\, the idea that even from the deepest darkness\, a path to salvation can emerge. \nIn 1982\, the Austrian author Gert Jonke published Awakening to the Great Sleep War\, a virtuoso narrative in which the reality of a city disintegrates. Tram tracks shed their stops\, books flee from libraries\, stone figures detach themselves from facades. For this\, Jonke invents the “acoustic space designer” Burgmüller\, a poetic adventurer who conducts flocks of birds\, loves three women\, and philosophically observes: “Everything has become so transparent that nothing can be seen through anymore.” The work is considered one of the major achievements of the author\, who passed away in 2009. \nNefeli Kentoni (b. 1998\, Cyprus) is a London-based director\, writer\, and interdisciplinary artist whose work responds to the remains of a world that endlessly collapses and endlessly erects. The theatrical and cinematic form have been the platform in which she negotiates and explores the gaps between language and image\, the performer-viewer relationship\, and the performativity of space. Weaving together tenderness\, absurdity\, and humour\, she dismantles reality and rebuilds it within unpredictable landscapes. \nNefeli is a graduate of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Central Saint Martins (UAL)\, where she was nominated for the MullenLowe NOVA Award. Her work has been showcased internationally at institutions and festivals including the Prague Quadrennial\, Tate Modern\, Barbican Centre\, Cyprus State Gallery of Contemporary Art\, The Place\, Nicosia International Festival\, Dance House Lefkosia\, and the Chengdu–Chongqing International Theatre Festival\, among others. \nIn 2020\, she served as Writer in Residence at Tate Exchange and took part in the Barbican’s Young Visual Arts Group for two consecutive years. Her short film Fragility of Language won the Screendance Short Film Competition at the 36th Leeds International Film Festival. Her performance Katabasis was a finalist at the Offies Awards 2025 and received the Best Director Award at the Chengdu–Chongqing International Theatre Festival in China\, where her performance Wall of Babel was also honoured with the Best Play Award. \n  \nTake the opportunity to engage with German-language literature. \nWe look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Elfriede Jelinek: Language Unleashed (Age Restriction 16+)
DESCRIPTION:Child prodigy\, scandalous author\, traitor to the fatherland\, feminist\, fashion lover\, communist\, language terrorist\, rebel\, enfant terrible\, nest fouler\, brilliant\, vulnerable artist. \nThe Weeks of the German Language series opens with a screening and subsequent discussion of a homage to Elfriede Jelinek\, on the occasion of her 80th birthday\, organized by the Austrian Embassy. \nThe Film Elfriede Jelinek\, who in 2004 was the first German speaking female writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature\, focuses on her artistic approach to language. She is particularly interested in Ancient Greek drama and myth and their contemporary revision through a feminist and post-colonial lens. Since 2012 she has been an artistic associate of Animafest Cyprus\, the International Animation Festival of Cyprus. She has participated in international festival juries and theatre and classics conferences. \nDr Olga Kourelou holds a PhD in Film Studies from King’s College London. Having held teaching positions at King’s College London and Sussex University\, she is now Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Nicosia. She served as a member of the Cyprus Cinema Advisory Committee and has now been appointed to the Subcommittee for Script Evaluation. SUMMARY:Two to One.
DESCRIPTION:Comedy with Sandra Hüller. \n\n\n\nThe Goethe-Institut Cyprus warmly invites you to the screening of TWO TO ONE (2024) on the 4th November 2026. Natja Brunckhorn’s film is about a group of friends\, who with the help of their neighbourhood try to stop capitalism. The filmmaker was inspired by true events happening around the time of the German reunification: \nAs part of the currency union\, millions of GDR-Marks were covertly stored underground in Halberstadt\, in total close to 400 tons worth of bills. Today we know with certainty that money was taken from the vaults\, but which sum was stolen in total remains unknown. \nBased on this true story Natja Brunckhorst developed her film – set in the summer of 1990 in Halberstadt. Maren (Sandra Hüller)\, Robert (Max Riemelt) und Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) grew up together and are close friends. They find the secret stash of GDR-Marks by accident and decide to stuff their backpacks with money. Together with their neighbours they come up with a clever system to trick West-Germans into exchanging the (now worthless) currency with valuable goods. The summer promises not  only to become an exciting adventure for the three friends\, but also a defining turning point in their lives. \nTwo to One is a love- and friendship-comedy about money and justice. And an homage to a time in which everything seemed possible. \nThe film is shown as part of the Weeks of the German Language. This initiative\, organized by the embassies of Austria\, Germany\, and Switzerland\, together with the Goethe-Institut Cyprus and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education\, Sport and Youth\, annually hosts a variety of activities and events focusing on the German language and the cultures of the participating countries. \nWe would also like to extend our special thanks to the Friends of Cinema Society for supporting this film screening. \nTrailer: https://youtu.be/Y0Fs1FLqAsA?si=xz-BB05t_Up1kF6- \n
