SUMMARY:Discussion The Power of Images
DESCRIPTION:DialogRaumGoethe \nThe Power of Images is the launch event of the new event series titled DialogRaumGoethe\, which will take place regularly at the event hall of the Goethe-Institut Cyprus in the Buffer Zone. Cypriot and German experts from academia\, culture and media will be speaking on current topics and inviting the audience to participate in discussions and ask questions. \nFor the first DialogRaum event the invited speakers are media scholars Evripides Zantides and Klaus Sachs-Hombach will talk about the power and independent existence of images in media. The discussion will be moderated by theatre professional Diomedes Koufteros. The idea for this discussion arose from the theatre performance Picture Perfect by the SRSLY_yours Ensemble. This performance\, which is supported by the Goethe-Institut\, premiered at Rialto Theater in March and will be shown in Nicosia at ARTos House in early November. Achim Wieland and the SRSLY_yours ensemble will take part in the discussion at DialogRaumGoethe. \nSince Plato\, the status of pictorial representations has been controversial. On the one hand\, pictures were considered inferior to words when it came to expressing abstract thoughts. On the other hand\, an almost magical aura has been attributed to them. This ambivalent attitude has prevailed to the present day\, with all kinds of newly invented pictorial media such as photography or virtual reality evoking reactions that range from greatest enthusiasm to utmost skepticism. Alongside this background\, our talk attempts to clarify the specific properties of visual communication with images playing a pivotal role in the rhetoric of communication. While the lecture introduces relevant theoretical frameworks\, it aims to analyse and discuss images through specific examples and analytical tools.

SUMMARY:The Library Project II - Rejected Sounds of the Magic Flute by Evelyn Anastasiou
DESCRIPTION:The Library Project is a biannual curatorial endeavour of the Department of Fine Arts at the Cyprus University of Technology. It foregrounds the multimedia nature of contemporary art as well as the artistic practices that explore emerging socio-political issues of our times. This year it will take place in the garden of the Municipal University Library in Limassol. \nIn cooperation with the Austrian Embassy Nicosia\, this second edition of the Library Project will be presenting the Cypriot visual artist Evelyn Anastasiou and her project – an unusual musical performance drawing from The Magic Flute [Die Zauberflöte] (1791) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, entitled “Rejected Sounds of The Magic Flute”. \nAnastasiou’s research on the Magic Flute leads her to the archives of the Berlin State Library\, where the original scores of the work are located. There\, the artist discovers a series of notes deleted by Mozart himself\, which were never presented to the public\, as they were condemned by their creator to oblivion. \nThen\, through a detailed recording\, Anastasiou gathers the fragments of the Magic Flute and assembles them creating a new musical composition; a short soundtrack\, which can be seen as a hybrid post-musical work. With a reference point of this piece\, and with the participation of a large orchestra\, the Cypriot visual artist will be presenting a Gesamtkunstwerk at the Municipal Library. \nAt the same time\, seeking the tangible presence of the public in her artistic practice – a fact that acquires special importance in the current biopolitical condition – the artist activates the external space of the library\, transforming it into a bizarre operatic setting\, which will welcome her work. \nWith her Rejected Sounds of The Magic Flute\, Anastasiou attempts to transcend the boundaries of artistic genres and proposes an explicit experimental experience. \n  \nCoordinated and Produced by Cut Contemporary Fine Arts Lab \nCurated by Dr. Konstantinos Argianas \nConductor Dr. Francis Guy \nWith the participation of The Commandaria Orchestra of the Cyprus Wine Museum in Limassol. \nCONTACT: 00357 96 509976 \n  \nCOVID-19 \nEntrance only with a certificate of vaccination or recovery certificate. \n1.Certificate of vaccination with at least one dose of the vaccine.
