SUMMARY:Staged reading with Nefeli Kentoni
DESCRIPTION:On November 23\, a staged reading directed by Nefeli Kentoni will take place\, organized by the Austrian Embassy and the Goethe-Institut Cyprus. Selected literary texts from the German-speaking world will be performed live on stage. \nLimassol – a city in transition. Gentrification and rapid urban development shape its face\, transforming streets\, houses\, and ways of life. In this reading\, we invite you on a poetic journey through the city’s transformation: its construction\, its destruction\, and the traces it leaves within us. The selected poems and texts reflect the ambivalence of the urban\, between progress and loss\, hope and despair. \nFor this event\, Nefeli Kentoni has engaged deeply with city poems by the German poet Bertolt Brecht and with the work Awakening to the Great Sleep War by the Austrian author Gert Jonke\, combining them into a unique fusion. Let yourself be surprised by this exciting and extraordinary connection! \nDirected by: Nefeli Kentoni\nOn stage: Fatima Rodriguez\, Melina Koutsofta\nModerated by: Androula Kafa\n\nInformation about the texts and Nefeli Kentoni: \nBrecht’s city poems mirror the contradictory experience of the metropolis: they reveal the harshness and desolation of urban life\, yet at the same time\, a glimpse of another future shines through. Amid concrete and despair\, hope persists\, the idea that even from the deepest darkness\, a path to salvation can emerge. \nIn 1982\, the Austrian author Gert Jonke published Awakening to the Great Sleep War\, a virtuoso narrative in which the reality of a city disintegrates. Tram tracks shed their stops\, books flee from libraries\, stone figures detach themselves from facades. For this\, Jonke invents the “acoustic space designer” Burgmüller\, a poetic adventurer who conducts flocks of birds\, loves three women\, and philosophically observes: “Everything has become so transparent that nothing can be seen through anymore.” The work is considered one of the major achievements of the author\, who passed away in 2009. \nNefeli Kentoni (b. 1998\, Cyprus) is a London-based director\, writer\, and interdisciplinary artist whose work responds to the remains of a world that endlessly collapses and endlessly erects. The theatrical and cinematic form have been the platform in which she negotiates and explores the gaps between language and image\, the performer-viewer relationship\, and the performativity of space. Weaving together tenderness\, absurdity\, and humour\, she dismantles reality and rebuilds it within unpredictable landscapes. \nNefeli is a graduate of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Central Saint Martins (UAL)\, where she was nominated for the MullenLowe NOVA Award. Her work has been showcased internationally at institutions and festivals including the Prague Quadrennial\, Tate Modern\, Barbican Centre\, Cyprus State Gallery of Contemporary Art\, The Place\, Nicosia International Festival\, Dance House Lefkosia\, and the Chengdu–Chongqing International Theatre Festival\, among others. \nIn 2020\, she served as Writer in Residence at Tate Exchange and took part in the Barbican’s Young Visual Arts Group for two consecutive years. Her short film Fragility of Language won the Screendance Short Film Competition at the 36th Leeds International Film Festival. Her performance Katabasis was a finalist at the Offies Awards 2025 and received the Best Director Award at the Chengdu–Chongqing International Theatre Festival in China\, where her performance Wall of Babel was also honoured with the Best Play Award. \n  \nTake the opportunity to engage with German-language literature. \nWe look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Greetings from Mars
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Weeks of the German Language\, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus is organizing a screening of the film Greetings from Mars at the Heritage School\, a member of the worldwide network of “Schools: Partners for the Future” (PASCH). \nTom is ten years old\, autistic\, and dreams of becoming an astronaut. It is required reading in many schools in Germany and has sold over one million copies. Judith Kerr passed away in May 2019\, before the film was released in December of the same year. \nThe screenings are open to the public \nTrailer: https://youtu.be/oNg1OCFGbr8?feature=shared

SUMMARY:Alma and Oskar
DESCRIPTION:The film follows the amour fou between the Grande Madame of Vienna’s cultural society\, Alma Mahler\, and the young expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka. Alma allows herself to be painted by the unknown artist\, seduces him and instructs the inexperienced young man in the arts of eroticism. He is one of many conquests to her\, but she is to him his first great love. He makes her his muse; she becomes his source of inspiration.  He cannot paint without her\, he says. But she refuses to be there for him alone\, because she too is striving for recognition in the society of Vienna. \n  \nThe Embassy of Austria has the pleasure to screen a drama directed by Dieter Berner. In 1912\, the widowed Alma Mahler\, Grand Dame of Viennese society\, falls for the „Enfant Terrible „of Vienna‘s art scene\, Oskar Kokoschka. But\, as their passion grows\, it threatens to destroy the world they have built for themselves\, and to take them both down with it. \n  \nDirector: Dieter Berner – 2022 – 88‘ \nGenre: Drama \nA few words from the Director: Although Alma and Oskar are “historical” figures\, the audience should encounter them as if they were of the “here and now”. Their conflicts are modern\, and we do not need nostalgic evocations of the past to understand them. \nCast: Emily Cox\, Valentin Postlmayr\, Anton von Lucke \n  \nRating: 16+ \nLanguage: German with English subtitles \nIn cooperation with the Friends of Cinema Society \n

SUMMARY:Moving Images International Videodance Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:Within the framework of the dance film festival Moving Images\, which is organised by Egomio Cultural Centre every year German dance films are presented in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Zypern. Three films that have been selected by Elena Christodoulidou (Egomio Cultural Centre) give a glimpse into the dance scene in Germany\, where many international artists work. \nThe films of the dance film festival Moving Images will be screened on 27 November 2022 in a continuous loop between 12 and 5pm. \n  \nNew Version  \nDuration 0:4:19 \nWith this new form\, the subject uses his movement abilities and the potential of his imagination in order to mirror our new future selves. \nMarcin Motyl is an independent dancer\, choreographer and video artist based in Berlin. Today\, Marcin is working to design a unique auteur creative method while developing a specific language of movement. Intending to create an individualistic approach to choreography\, employs his professional education and experience as the foundation\, blending it with broadly defined notions of the abstract and his personal interest in the human mind. To date\, his works have been shown in Japan\, China\, Germany and Poland. \n  \nDignity (Würde) \nDuration 0:6:02 \nIs human dignity inviolable? \nIn the garden room of the Cromford mansion\, four dancers grapple with their understanding of dignity. Dressed in workers’ overalls\, they form a considerable contrast to the sumptuously furnished room\, which was once facilitated by child labor in the 18th century. The diverse cultural origins of the dancers underline their different understanding of dignity and human rights. \nThe complexity of the topic is also supported with the help of fractal technology. For this\, the dancers interact with a separate camera\, which was placed directly in front of a monitor showing the filmed images. The inertia of the image transmission results in a time delay in the choreography and thus creates new approaches to movement. The result is a kaleidoscope as versatile as the understanding of dignity itself. \nNadja Görts studied musical theater and is currently a dance master student at the German Sport University Cologne\, Germany. She has appeared in numerous dance performances\, musicals\, operettas and operas and is working as a choreographer at home and all over Europe. She is also a music theater educator for the German Rhine Opera. Her dance film debut DIGNITY won awards at international film festivals and the live adaptation premiered at Cromford Manor in April 2022. Nadja is currently working on a new performance dealing with the relationship between mother and daughter. \n  \nCarrières \nDuration 0:5:18 \nCarrières is a short dance film that presents a pas de deux interpreted by two professional dancers. It tells the story of a romantic encounter evoking the theme of separation. This short film has been entirely filmed in the « Carrières de Lumières » in Les Baux de Provence. \nMaxime Mathieu has been dancing in several European ballet companies such as the Stuttgarter Ballet\, Royal Ballet of Flanders\, Wiener Staatsballet and Ballet de Nice Méditerrannée\, as well as guesting with the Cape Town City Ballet\, the Tivoli Ballet Theater and the Ballet West Scotland. Since 2012 Maxime Mathieu choreographs and teaches. Currently a dancer at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe\, he received distinctions for his creations as a choreographer in New York (Valentina Kozlova competition) and at the Varna International Ballet Competition. Since 2021\, Maxime produces and directs short dance films such as «The Embrace»\, «Chaconne» or «Carrières».

SUMMARY:Moving Silence
DESCRIPTION:An evening dedicated to contemporary “silent” moving image and experimental sound \n  \nFollowing the great success of Moving Silence in Cyprus for the past eleven years at ARTos\, Moving Silence takes place for the twelfth consecutive year in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Cyprus. On Thursday\, 24 November 2022 at 20:30 at ARTos\, musicians and composers will meet to perform live soundtracks for silent video and film works by contemporary creators of their choice.  The audience will have a unique experience where the musicians and composers perform live their music while the films/videos that have inspired them are simultaneously screened.  \n“Any visual style can profit from a sound language\, by using advanced digital technologies as well as old analogue techniques. Live performances sustain and amplify the films as musicians can breathe new life into silent cinema\, which inappropriately remained silent for such a long time.” Encouraging collaboration and exchange between musicians\, artists and cinematographers\, the Moving Silence platform\, therefore\, invites the Cyprus audience to new audiovisual experiences expressed through live improvisations and interpretations\, where experimental image and sound are expected to meet in unusual and unexpected ways. What is Moving Silence? \nMoving Silence was originally founded in the summer of 2009 by the musician Marco Brosolo\, filmmaker Matthias Fritsch and producer Federico Bassetti with the aim to create events that connect the roots of cinematography with the present aesthetics of image\, the live music production and the potential of new technology. It constitutes a poetic\, intercultural and collaborative attempt in times of information overload. It embraces experimentation and merging between contemporary forms of visual and sound inviting artists from different parts of the world to join in. Moving Silence events have taken place in different cities around Europe.

SUMMARY:Oberhausen on Tour in Nicosia - MuVi Award
DESCRIPTION:Goethe-Institut Cyprus and ARTos House are happy to present three short film programmes from the 67th edition of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen over three nights in November 2022. The screenings taking place at ARTos House start on Wednesday 2 November with five films from the German Competition programme. On Thursday 3 November the five films comprising the Art and Experiment programme will be presented. The screenings conclude on Friday 4 November with the eleven films in the MuVi Award programme. \n  \nMuVi Award       \n  \nIn 1999 Oberhausen introduced the world’s first festival prize for music videos. The impulse to create this award arose out of the observation that music videos had increasingly managed to emancipate themselves from their purely illustrative and advertising function\, transforming themselves into a completely independent form of visualisation. Today\, music videos have proven themselves to be an independent short film genre that even managed to survive the decline of its midwife\, music television. This programme gathers together all works nominated for the 2021 MuVi Award\, supplemented by two artistically outstanding videos from United Kingdom and Iran. \n  \nThe 1st MuVi Prize went to the Deepfake music video “Junge Milliardäre”\, in which a band member uses artificial intelligence to become a singing Elon Musk who swings his hips without restraint. Christine Gensheimer looks back to the pioneering days of computer graphics in “The Source of the Absolute Knowledge”\, awarded 2nd prize\, and playfully lets man meet machine. The MuVi Online Audience Award went to Mishka Kornai for “NOAH”. The video traces some people who go into telephone booths to make phone calls. \n  \nFanuks: I Want to Sing Like Ella (Der Plan)\nDuc-Thi Bui/Marc Engenhart\, 5‘30‘‘ \n  \nForever Corona (Oliver Polak\, Erobique)\nKay Otto\, 3‘30‘‘ \n  \nHaare Zu Gold (Hans Unstern)\nHans Unstern\, 9‘30‘‘ \n  \nJunge Milliardäre (UWE)\nUWE\, 4‘30‘‘ \n  \nMrs Yamahas Summer Tune (Richard von der Schulenburg)\nKatharina Duve/Timo Schierhorn\, 4‘30‘‘ \n  \nNOAH (Christian Löffler)\nMishka Kornai\, 4‘ \n  \nOut of Control (DJ Hell)\nStacie Ant\, 3‘30‘‘ \n  \nPointilist (Kröter)\nJo Zahn\, 6‘ \n  \nRasenmäher in E-Moll (beißpony)\nStephanie Müller/Klaus Erika Dietl\, 15‘ \n  \nre:Biber #4 (ThereAreNoMoreFourSeasons)\nKlöfkorn Gavois\, 7‘ \n  \nThe Pure and the Damned (Oneohtrix Point Never)\nOliver Pietsch\, 4‘30‘‘ \n  \nThe Source of the Absolute Knowledge (Jaakko Eino Kalevi)\nChristine Gensheimer\, 5‘ \n  \n+ Bonus \n  \nStation Three (Quartet Diminished)\nPooya Razi\, Iran\, 3’ \n  \nTraitors (Benefits)\nKingsley Hall\, United Kingdom\, 4’30’’

On Thursday 3 November the five films comprising the Art and Experiment programme will be presented. The screenings conclude on Friday 4 November with the eleven films in the MuVi Award programme. \nArt and Experiment \nThese six works between black box and white cube make use of very unusual aesthetics and techniques. “Pole Žin” shows the development of the North Bohemian landscape and the efforts to implement utopian ideas. “{if your bait can sing the wild one will come} Like Shadows Through Leaves” is an artistic exploration that rethinks relationships between culture and climate change. “Széphercegnő” is a simulation that describes the conflict between one’s own movements and inevitable limitations. \n“Un très long temps d’exposition” discovers and connects images and narratives of world and private history. With her simultaneously analytical composition of chains of image motifs\, Chloé Galibert-Laîné makes visible the political-ideological dimension of technological imaging processes. “Doors of Reception” is a collage of door sounds from various science fiction films that create an abstract sound painting of opening and closing colour fields Finally\, “Before the fall there was no fall. Episode 02: surfaces” shows how historical traces manifest themselves in Srebrenica and how gradually fading graffiti evoke a mural of testimony. \n  \nPole Žin (Fields of Žinas)\nMarie Lukáčová/Anna Remešová\, Czech Republic 2020\,\ncolour\, Czech with English subs\, 9’ \n{if your bait can sing the wild one will come} Like Shadows Through Leaves\nLucy Davis\, Singapore/Finland 2020\ncolour\, English/Malay/Hokkien/Mandarin/Tamil with English subs\, 28’ \nSzéphercegnő (Princess Beauty)\nEszter Szabó\, Hungary 2020\ncolour\, English\, 2’30’’ \nUn très long temps d’exposition (A Very Long Exposure Time)\nChloé Galibert-Laîné\, France 2020\ncolour\, English\, 7’ \nDoors of Reception\nBjørn Melhus\, Germany 2021\ncolour\, no text\, 2’30’’ \nBefore the fall there was no fall. SUMMARY:Oberhausen on Tour - German Competition
\nGerman Competition \nThis programme brings together some of the most interesting works to come out of the German Competition and the newly introduced German Online Competition of the 2021 Festival. “Top Down Memory” deals with manipulations of history in the context of the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace. With the help of Mussolini\, Karl Liebknecht and Justin Bieber\, among others\, the film describes the political significance of the balcony and asks who writes our history. In the silent film “Levantado do Chão”\, a man undertakes a somnambulistic city walk beyond constraints and time. “X” is a cinematic ancestral ritual in honour of the spirits of the Ruhr area\, in which Mareike Wegener imagines a devil’s pact as the last resort for people who can no longer find work. “(Steve) Temple”\, on the other hand\, treats the Ruhr area as a fictional landscape and anarchic space where people live in spontaneity and cooperation free of hierarchies. \nWhile Simon Rupieper notes that pixels get smaller and smaller with age\, a cyber entity connects with an international feminist network in “feminism is a browser_materialisation”\, trying to find out why it exists and what became of the utopias of the internet. In the process\, the film sets up an experimental monument to some of the pioneers of cyberfeminism. \n  \nTop Down Memory \nDaniel Theiler\, Germany 2020 \ncolour\, German/English/Italian with English or German subs\, 12’30’’ \n  \nLevantado do Chão (Raised from the Ground) \nMelissa Dullius/Gustavo Jahn\, Brazil/Germany 2020 \nb/w\, silent\, 11’ \n  \nIm gelben Licht (Through Yellow Light) \nSimon Rupieper\, Germany 2020 \ncolour\, German with English subs\, 7‘30‘‘ \n  \nfeminism is a browser_materialisation \nCharlotte Eifler\, Germany 2021 \ncolour\, English with German subs\, 12’ \n  \n(Steve) Temple \nTanita Olbrich\, Germany/USA 2020 \ncolour\, English\, 6’ \n  \nX \nMareike Wegener\, Germany 2020 \ncolour\, German with English subs\, 28‘30‘‘
