SUMMARY:Berlin Wall x Street Art - art and dialogue in divided capitals
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall the German Embassy invites you to a special event exploring the connection between art\, history\, and community with Mrs. Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal\, Director of the East Side Gallery in Berlin. \nThe East Side Gallery is an outdoor art gallery in Berlin\, built on a preserved section of the Berlin Wall. Together with well-known street artist Twenty Three we will discuss on the topics of walls and explore the theme of separation and art. \nParticipants:\n– Mrs. Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal\, Director East Side Gallery Berlin\n– Twenty Three\, Street Artist based in Nicosia\n– Mr. Marios Epaminondas\, Facilitator\, Association for Historical Dialogue and Research \nRegistrations until 11.11. to ku-10@niko.diplo.de \nThe event is supported by the ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen.

SUMMARY:Komplett Kafka
DESCRIPTION:A comic biography by Nicolas Mahler \nWe are delighted to be presenting the poster exhibition Komplett Kafka in cooperation with the artist Nicolas Mahler and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart to mark Franz Kafka’s anniversary year 2024. \nFranz Kafka not only wrote prose\, he was also passionate about drawing: ‘You know\, I was once a great draughtsman’\, he wrote half ironically\, half proudly to his long-term fiancée Felice Bauer in 1913 about his artistic ambitions. \nDrawing had once given him “more satisfaction than anything else”. So what could be more fitting than to honour him on his centenary with a comic biography? And by Nicolas Mahler\, who has a similarly minimalist drawing style? \nMahler presents Kafka’s life and work in an inimitably amusing and poignant way and does not shy away from the really big questions: Why did Kafka’s plan to write a series of cheap travel guides fail? Who wrote the sequel to one of his most important works\, ‘The Metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa’? And what was the story behind the ‘white slave’? The answers and much more can be found in Komplett Kafka. (Source: Suhrkamp Verlag) \n\nOpening hours of the exhibition: \nWednesday – Friday 16:00-19:00\nSaturday 11:00-14:00\n(Closed on 9 and 16 November) \nLanguage: German\, English \nAccompanying educational material \nThis comic poster exhibition introduces young learners of German to Kafka and his works\, as well as the art of Nicolas Mahler\, and also brings the themes addressed by Kafka into the world they live in today. \nDidactisation Complete Kafka | Worksheets for the poster exhibition \n\n\nDidactisation Complete Kafka A2-B1(PDF\, 7 MB) \n\n\n\n\n\nDidactisation Complete Kafka B2-C1(PDF\, 7 MB) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicolas Mahler \nNicolas Mahler\, born in 1969\, lives and works as a comic artist and illustrator in Vienna. His comics and cartoons appear in newspapers and magazines such as Die Zeit\, NZZ am Sonntag\, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and Titanic. He has received several awards for his extensive work\, including the Max und Moritz Prize for ‘Best German-language Comic Artist’ in 2010\, the Literaturhäuser Prize in 2015 and the Sondermann Prize in 2019. Mahler is artistic director of the School of Poetry in Vienna.

SUMMARY:When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
DESCRIPTION:Within the framework of the Weeks of the German language the Goethe-Institut Cyprus is organizing film screenings at the two schools in Cyprus that are part of the global PASCH network\, International School of Paphos (ISOP) and Heritage Private School in Limassol. Both films deal with the current as ever issues of racism and displacement\, but through the eyes of children. When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is set in Germany in the early 1930s and Too Far Away in the late 2010s. \nWhen Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (2019) is directed by Oscar winning film director Caroline Link. She is known for addressing complex issues through emotional storytelling\, an approach she followed also for this film. The director herself stated about the films When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit and Nowhere in Africa (2001) that she was intrigued by the fact that both stories deal with the Third Reich\, but do not play in Germany. \nBerlin 1933: Anna Kemper is 9 years old when her life is turned on its head. To escape the nazis\, her father must flee from Germany to Zurich. His family follows shortly after. Anna can only choose one of her toys to take with her\, so many other things she is forced to leave behind. She now has to face the challenges and hardships of having to leave her home and fleeing to a foreign country. \nThe film is a literary adaptation of the semi-autographical book by Judith Kerr. The book was first released in English in 1971 and a German translation by Annemarie Böll followed in 1973. The book\, written for children\, tells the story from the perspective of a child. It is required reading in many schools in Germany and has sold over one million copies. Judith Kerr passed away in May 2019\, before the film was released in December of the same year. \nThe screenings are open to the public \nTrailer: https://youtu.be/oNg1OCFGbr8?feature=shared

SUMMARY:Alma and Oskar
DESCRIPTION:The film follows the amour fou between the Grande Madame of Vienna’s cultural society\, Alma Mahler\, and the young expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka. Alma allows herself to be painted by the unknown artist\, seduces him and instructs the inexperienced young man in the arts of eroticism. He is one of many conquests to her\, but she is to him his first great love. He makes her his muse; she becomes his source of inspiration.  He cannot paint without her\, he says. But she refuses to be there for him alone\, because she too is striving for recognition in the society of Vienna. \n  \nThe Embassy of Austria has the pleasure to screen a drama directed by Dieter Berner. In 1912\, the widowed Alma Mahler\, Grand Dame of Viennese society\, falls for the „Enfant Terrible „of Vienna‘s art scene\, Oskar Kokoschka. But\, as their passion grows\, it threatens to destroy the world they have built for themselves\, and to take them both down with it. \n  \nDirector: Dieter Berner – 2022 – 88‘ \nGenre: Drama \nA few words from the Director: Although Alma and Oskar are “historical” figures\, the audience should encounter them as if they were of the “here and now”. Their conflicts are modern\, and we do not need nostalgic evocations of the past to understand them. \nCast: Emily Cox\, Valentin Postlmayr\, Anton von Lucke \n  \nRating: 16+ \nLanguage: German with English subtitles \nIn cooperation with the Friends of Cinema Society \n
