SUMMARY:The Art of Making
DESCRIPTION:Three years after the documentary exhibition The Art of Making\, which was presented at and supported by the Goethe-Institut Cyprus and illuminated the lives\, motivations\, and struggles of 20 craftspeople in Germany and Cyprus\, an open lecture will revisit its themes and explore how the craft landscape has evolved since. The lecture will focus on personal stories of craftspeople in the exhibition\, examine Germany’s current craft education system\, and reflect on whether craft today serves society\, or has turned into a romanticized tradition. A subsequent panel will turn the focus to Cyprus\, addressing the challenges\, opportunities\, and social status of craftspeople within its contemporary Cypriot context. \n  \nParticipants of Panel Discussion: \n– Coordination: Achilleas Kentonis\, Managing Director ARTos House \n– Mrs Andrea Charalambides \n– Mr Konstantinos Kashiotis \n– Mr Georgios N. Paparoditis \n  \nSchedule: \n17:00-17:15 Welcome \n17:15-18:00 Lecture \n18:00-18:30 Panel Discussion \n18:30 Closing

SUMMARY:Komplett Kafka
DESCRIPTION:A comic biography by Nicolas Mahler \nWe are delighted to be presenting the poster exhibition Komplett Kafka in cooperation with the artist Nicolas Mahler and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart to mark Franz Kafka’s anniversary year 2024. \nFranz Kafka not only wrote prose\, he was also passionate about drawing: ‘You know\, I was once a great draughtsman’\, he wrote half ironically\, half proudly to his long-term fiancée Felice Bauer in 1913 about his artistic ambitions. \nDrawing had once given him “more satisfaction than anything else”. So what could be more fitting than to honour him on his centenary with a comic biography? And by Nicolas Mahler\, who has a similarly minimalist drawing style? \nMahler presents Kafka’s life and work in an inimitably amusing and poignant way and does not shy away from the really big questions: Why did Kafka’s plan to write a series of cheap travel guides fail? Who wrote the sequel to one of his most important works\, ‘The Metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa’? And what was the story behind the ‘white slave’? The answers and much more can be found in Komplett Kafka. (Source: Suhrkamp Verlag) \n\nOpening hours of the exhibition: \nWednesday – Friday 16:00-19:00\nSaturday 11:00-14:00\n(Closed on 9 and 16 November) \nLanguage: German\, English \nAccompanying educational material \nThis comic poster exhibition introduces young learners of German to Kafka and his works\, as well as the art of Nicolas Mahler\, and also brings the themes addressed by Kafka into the world they live in today. \nDidactisation Complete Kafka | Worksheets for the poster exhibition \n\n\nDidactisation Complete Kafka A2-B1(PDF\, 7 MB) \n\n\n\n\n\nDidactisation Complete Kafka B2-C1(PDF\, 7 MB) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicolas Mahler \nNicolas Mahler\, born in 1969\, lives and works as a comic artist and illustrator in Vienna. His comics and cartoons appear in newspapers and magazines such as Die Zeit\, NZZ am Sonntag\, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and Titanic. He has received several awards for his extensive work\, including the Max und Moritz Prize for ‘Best German-language Comic Artist’ in 2010\, the Literaturhäuser Prize in 2015 and the Sondermann Prize in 2019. Mahler is artistic director of the School of Poetry in Vienna.

SUMMARY:The Grünenberg experience: a medieval view of Cyprus
DESCRIPTION:The Centre of Visual Arts and Research is very proud to announce the upcoming exhibition “The Grünenberg experience: a medieval view of Cyprus” on the German fifteenth-century traveller Konrad Grünenberg (1415-1494) who visited Cyprus in 1486. \nIn collaboration with the Baden State Library in Karlsruhe\, and with the sponsorship of the German Embassy and support from the Gotha Research Centre of the University of Erfurt\, the CVAR will host some of the rarest and earliest illustrations of Cyprus contained in the two manuscript versions of Konrad Grünenberg’s journals: the codex that kept in the Baden State Library\, most probably the author’s own copy of his journal\, and the Gotha Research Center codex of the University of Erfurt\, which is believed to be a copy that was presented by the author to a dignitary. \nThe exhibition will run from 4 to 17 November 2021\, at the CVAR. Opening hours of the exhibition: 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nOn Monday 8 November\, the manuscript curator of the Baden State Library Dr Annika Stello will give a lecture on “Travel and Travellers in the Eastern Mediterranean in the 15th century” at the Melina Merkouri Municipal Hall at 7.00 p.m.
