SUMMARY:Berlin Wall x Street Art - art and dialogue in divided capitals
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall the German Embassy invites you to a special event exploring the connection between art\, history\, and community with Mrs. Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal\, Director of the East Side Gallery in Berlin. \nThe East Side Gallery is an outdoor art gallery in Berlin\, built on a preserved section of the Berlin Wall. SUMMARY:Komplett Kafka
DESCRIPTION:A comic biography by Nicolas Mahler \nWe are delighted to be presenting the poster exhibition Komplett Kafka in cooperation with the artist Nicolas Mahler and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart to mark Franz Kafka’s anniversary year 2024. \nFranz Kafka not only wrote prose\, he was also passionate about drawing: ‘You know\, I was once a great draughtsman’\, he wrote half ironically\, half proudly to his long-term fiancée Felice Bauer in 1913 about his artistic ambitions. \nDrawing had once given him “more satisfaction than anything else”. So what could be more fitting than to honour him on his centenary with a comic biography? And by Nicolas Mahler\, who has a similarly minimalist drawing style? \nMahler presents Kafka’s life and work in an inimitably amusing and poignant way and does not shy away from the really big questions: Why did Kafka’s plan to write a series of cheap travel guides fail? SUMMARY:Being Youth in Times of Crises
DESCRIPTION:Most parts of the world have been facing three consecutive crises since 2008 affecting the lives of billions. Starting with the economic and financial crises of 2008\, followed by the 2019\, COVID-19 pandemic\, the general population but more specifically young people have been affected the most. Young people were not only affected by the pandemic when it comes to their health status\, but also youth unemployment has risen\, their mental health was impacted\, their education and rights were threatened. Against these challenges\, the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 resulted in global political\, military and economic hardships that again massively and negatively affect the lives of people around the globe. In a time of crisis and uncertainty like the present\, youth voices and actions can all too easily be pushed aside. Within the specific context of Cyprus\, an island that remains divided until today\, the Turkish Cypriot community face additional hardship caused by a deteriorating economic situation in the north of the island and the devaluation of the Turkish Lira. \nThis event will bring the voices of young people from both communities of Cyprus to the table\, and it will give them the space to express their challenges\, views and thoughts for the future. \nPanelists:  \n\nMaria Kola\, President of the Cyprus Youth Council\nChristiana Xenofontos\, Board Member of the European Youth Forum\nAli Furkan Cetiner\, President of Lefkoşa Gençlik Derneği\nMustafa Özbilgehan\, President of Mağusa Gençlik Birliği\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by Antonis Kourras\, Cyprus Citizens’ Representative on the Conference on the Future of Europe  \nFor participation fill the form: https://forms.gle/aWtjom8j3B1mmnJa9

SUMMARY:Jenseits des Sichtbaren - Hilma af Klint / Beyond the visible - Hilma af Klint
DESCRIPTION:The art world makes a sensational discovery – just 100 years too late. In 1906 Hilma af Klint paints her first abstract picture\, long before Kandinsky\, Mondrian or Malewitsch. In total\, she creates over 1500 abstract paintings\, which remain hidden from posterity for decades. How could it be that a woman founded abstract painting at the beginning of the 20th century and no one took any notice of it? \nThis cinematic approach to a pioneer whose sensual work fascinates\, not only artistically\, shows a lifelong search for meaning that seeks to grasp life beyond the visible. Hilma af Klint’s extraordinary world of thought ranges from biology and astronomy to theosophy and the theory of relativity\, spanning a fascinating cosmos of unique images and notes. \nToday\, the artist inspires millions with her unrestrained thinking\, which culminates in an overwhelming oeuvre and turns the historiography of art on its head. \n  \nDirected by: Halina Dyrschka \nProduction: Eva Illmer\, Halina Dyrschka \nMusic:   Damian Scholl \nCinematography: Alicja Pahl\, Luana Knipfer \nFilm editing: Antje Lass\, Mario Orias

SUMMARY:Discussion The Power of Images
DESCRIPTION:DialogRaumGoethe \nThe Power of Images is the launch event of the new event series titled DialogRaumGoethe\, which will take place regularly at the event hall of the Goethe-Institut Cyprus in the Buffer Zone. Cypriot and German experts from academia\, culture and media will be speaking on current topics and inviting the audience to participate in discussions and ask questions. \nFor the first DialogRaum event the invited speakers are media scholars Evripides Zantides and Klaus Sachs-Hombach will talk about the power and independent existence of images in media. The discussion will be moderated by theatre professional Diomedes Koufteros. The idea for this discussion arose from the theatre performance Picture Perfect by the SRSLY_yours Ensemble. This performance\, which is supported by the Goethe-Institut\, premiered at Rialto Theater in March and will be shown in Nicosia at ARTos House in early November. Achim Wieland and the SRSLY_yours ensemble will take part in the discussion at DialogRaumGoethe. \nSince Plato\, the status of pictorial representations has been controversial. On the one hand\, pictures were considered inferior to words when it came to expressing abstract thoughts. On the other hand\, an almost magical aura has been attributed to them. This ambivalent attitude has prevailed to the present day\, with all kinds of newly invented pictorial media such as photography or virtual reality evoking reactions that range from greatest enthusiasm to utmost skepticism. Alongside this background\, our talk attempts to clarify the specific properties of visual communication with images playing a pivotal role in the rhetoric of communication. While the lecture introduces relevant theoretical frameworks\, it aims to analyse and discuss images through specific examples and analytical tools.

Frauke pines for the love of her life\, dies mysteriously and becomes a shadowy figure for those left behind. Restless Anna moves to the USA\, where she unexpectedly falls pregnant and gives birth to a girl. Summoned by the shadows of her past\, she returns with daughter Janna to Walchensee where Grandma Norma becomes an important figure for her granddaughter. \nAWARDS\nThe concept for Walchensee Forever received the Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship in 2016 and the completed film won the Bavarian Film Award for Best Documentary in January 2020. \n\nJanna Ji Wonders\n \nBorn in Mill Valley\, California\, she grew up near Lake Walchensee in Bavaria. SUMMARY:Automotive
DESCRIPTION:Part of the “Berlinale Selection 2020” film series programme.  \nDocumentary // 80 minutes // 2020 // Director: Jonas Heldt \nWhat is the value of work in the age of the digital revolution? In Ingolstadt\, 20-year-old Sedanur spends her nights sorting car parts on the assembly line for the robots. In the vast factory as high as a house\, forklifts circle each other beneath fluorescent lights and temp workers fight to keep their posts. Times are tough because Audi is about to cut a tenth of its workforce. Sedanur has no desire to find a husband and have children. She dreams of driving her own Mercedes one day. But when the diesel crisis kicks in\, she is one of the first to be let go. At the same time\, 33-year old Eva\, a headhunter working for Audi\, is looking for experts to automate some of their logistics. So-called “smart” factories that run without people are already emerging all over Europe. Eva knows that one day\, even her own job will be replaced by algorithms. But by then\, if all goes according to plan\, she will be living with her girlfriend in the Caribbean and will not have to work at all. Two very different representatives of a generation in which\, sooner or later\, everyone will be replaceable\, and for whom work as the basis of life is neither a certainty nor necessarily a source of identity. \nAWARDS\nAt the Berlinale 2020 Automotive was nominated for the Berlinale Documentary Award. \n\nJonas Heldt \nIn primary school\, he wanted to become a wildlife filmmaker. Having grown up in a small Bavarian village where whoever drove a Bavarian-made car was considered to have made it in life\, he moved to Berlin where he began to make his first documentaries and also worked as a radio reporter. Before filming Automotive\, he completed Hinterwelten 2014 and Tara 2017.
