Within the framework of the Weeks of the German language the Goethe-Institut Cyprus is organizing film screenings at the two schools in Cyprus that are part of the global PASCH network, International School of Paphos (ISOP) and Heritage Private School in Limassol. Both films deal with the current as ever issues of racism and displacement, but through the eyes of children. When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is set in Germany in the early 1930s and Too Far Away in the late 2010s.

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (2019) is directed by Oscar winning film director Caroline Link. She is known for addressing complex issues through emotional storytelling, an approach she followed also for this film. The director herself stated about the films When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit and Nowhere in Africa (2001) that she was intrigued by the fact that both stories deal with the Third Reich, but do not play in Germany.

Berlin 1933: Anna Kemper is 9 years old when her life is turned on its head. To escape the nazis, her father must flee from Germany to Zurich. His family follows shortly after. Anna can only choose one of her toys to take with her, so many other things she is forced to leave behind. She now has to face the challenges and hardships of having to leave her home and fleeing to a foreign country.

The film is a literary adaptation of the semi-autographical book by Judith Kerr. The book was first released in English in 1971 and a German translation by Annemarie Böll followed in 1973. The book, written for children, tells the story from the perspective of a child. It is required reading in many schools in Germany and has sold over one million copies. Judith Kerr passed away in May 2019, before the film was released in December of the same year.

The screenings are open to the public
