Finn und Jola are being chased by two police officers on a country road.

A film for the whole family.

On 13 November 2026, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus presents the children’s road movie WHAT THE FINN?! SUMMER OF SURPRISES (2023) by award winning film director Stefan Westerwelle.

Finn seems to have the worst luck. First, the canoeing trip with his father is cancelled, and then his backpack is stolen on the train to Berlin. Neither the conductor nor the police believe the ten-year-old’s explanation about the missing ticket, which was inside his bag. It just can’t be true! Fortunately, he meets the adventurous Jola, who spontaneously hijacks an old tractor. Together, they set off on an exciting journey to the sea. Along the way, the two runaways encounter a rude biker gang, a real wolf, and many other challenges.

Directed by Stefan Westerwelle, the film is based on the first volume of the German children’s book series Kannawoniwasein! by author Martin Muser. It captivates audiences with its diverse cast. Alongside the talented young actors Miran Selcuk and Lotte Engels, who portray the two protagonists, several well-known figures from Germany’s cultural and entertainment scene appear in the film. Ekrem Bora, better known as rapper Eko Fresh, comedy artist Gisa Flake, and comedian Mirja Boes provide plenty of entertainment for adult audiences while delighting younger viewers as well.

The film will be screened as part of the Weeks of the German Language at our partner school, The International School of Paphos.

The Weeks of the German Language is an annual cultural event series organised by the Embassies of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, together with the Goethe-Institut Cyprus, under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth. The series showcases a diverse programme of events related to the German language and the cultures of the participating countries.
